Munich is a small town at the heart of Bavaria. Having a very cozy atmosphere and being very close to mountains (around 100km) makes it very picturesque, especially around sunrise/sunset.
Even though the city is quite short in height (very rarely a building would have more than 5 floors), there are places where you can go to view all the beauty from above and enjoy the sunset. To witness it, make sure you have a clear sky day.
Yet, even when there are clouds and less chances to see mountains, it’s still beautiful. Go to the St Peter’s Cathedral, next to the Marienplatz, get a ticket to the top (around 2 euro) and prepare yourself for 10-15 minutes of climbing stairs through narrow pathways until you reach the top floor. Be strong, it’s so much worth it.
Once you’re at the observation deck, just take your time and enjoy the view. You can notice all main attractions from there – the Maximilianeum, the Olympic Park, the BMW headquarters, Allianz Arena, etc. Just be aware that the observation deck is quite narrow and there are usually lots of like-minded people who came to see Munich from above, the mountains and the sunset in general. So it may get quite crowded.
